Scariest are when a newbie to the ocean. All one knew before was a river, lake or bay.

When I was four years old we were at the beach in San Francisco. I was hit by a "sneaker wave" from behind. I just remember everything getting dark and all this sand swirling around and stuff. Then a hand snatched me up from behind. It was my dad. After making sure I was okay, he said to me, "I thought I told you never to turn your back on the ocean!" After that I heeded his warning.

Why are sneaker waves so prevalent in Oregon? California beaches don’t usually have these types of waves. We get crazy and beautiful high tides and winter wave action but at least you know what to expect. These sneaker waves are like Mother Nature trying to come up on shore and just take people. Lol

These are no joke. Was at Long Beach, WA. a couple of seasons ago which is just up the coast and one of the locals there told me that a month prior a little kid had been playing in ankle deep water and a sneaker wave came up, pulled it out to sea. Father went in after it and he was lost as well. Coast Guard search of the area afterwards did not find them.

At min 1.10 u see the tide reach the shore but a small wave speed up arching sidewards. I seen this happening today on my beach and looked scary. Wave would hit then all of a sudden a small wave picked up speed sidwards in the shallow

Judging by the comments this is a place that creates superimposed waves. The term sneaker suggests its rare but many videos of this place. It cant really be a sneaker if it regularly happens.
